Fairfield, CT - Junior Andreas Klang scored the only goal of the game and Monmouth withstood a final flury of Sacred Heart offense to hold on for a 1-0 win in Northeast Conference men's soccer action Sunday at Campus Field. The loss snaps a two game SHU winning streak while extending Monmouth's winning streak to six straight.
Following a Sacred Heart foul, Klang was awarded a free kick at the 34:59 mark. From about 25 yards out, he sent a ball high over the Pioneer wall of defenders. Goaltender Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) leapt and dove for the ball but it squirted just through his hands and into the top right corner of the net to give Monmouth the only score it would need.
Sacred Heart, which held a 14-12 shot advantage for the game had several good opportunities to tie the game late in the game. Midway through the second half, junior Jason Tessitore (Orange, NY) had an opportunity at a bicycle kick attempt that he mistimed, allowing the ball to fall harmlessly to the ground. Then with eight minutes left senior Brice Victor (Bridgeport, CT) had an opener corner of the let to shoot out but pushed the ball wide. Finally, with just over one minute left, senior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) sent a shot sailing high over a wide open net in a failed attempt to even the score.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday when the visit St. Francis (NY) in another NEC contest. Game time is 7:00 pm.
