Own Goal Sinks Pioneers Against Saint Francis
Oct. 20, 2006
Fairfield, CT - Saint Francis University got an own goal in the 88th minute to earn a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart in men's soccer action Friday at Campus Field. The Red Flash improve to 4-0-2 in NEC play while the Pioneers fall to 2-4 in the league.
The deciding goal came as the Pioneers tried to clear the ball out of their end of the field. Sophomore Jonatan Allback (Gothenburg, Sweden) intercepted a pass by the Red Flash's Scott Thompson and kicked the ball backed toward goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England). However, a miscommunication caused the ball to roll past Jones and by the time either player caught up with it, the ball was in the back of the net.
The Pioneers actually controlled most of the game offensively, out shooting the Red Flash 14-8. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 83rd minute when freshman Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) got off a header that just went over the crossbar. Jones made five saves for SHU while Red Flash goaltender Brad Williams did not have to make a save in the win.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday when they welcome Robert Morris to Campus Field in another critical NEC contest. Game time is 12:00 noon.
