Fairfield, CT - Each team scored a goal less then two minutes apart in the second half and Sacred Heart and Monmouth played to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer Sunday afternoon at a windy Campus Field. It was the fourth straight game the Pioneers finished with a tie.
Both teams struggled to control the ball through much of the game with the wind wreaking havoc on any ball that went high in the air. Monmouth was finally able to break on to the score board in the 86th minute when Steven Holloway converted a corner kick off the foot of Tom Gray. It was Holloway's fourth goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived, however, as just one minute later the Pioneers converted on a corner kick of their own. Pioneer senior Gustavo Netto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/LaGuardia C.C.) sent the ball across the goal to freshman David Backman (Gothenburg, Sweden/Aspero Idrotts Gymnasium) who fired the ball behind Hawks goaltender Arthur Satterwhite to tie the game at 1. The goal was Backman's first of his Pioneer career.
The Hawks out shot the Pioneers 18-11 for the game, although both teams had several shots that sailed high over the net thanks to the wind. Each team had some opportunities in the overtime but both goaltenders held strong, as Satterwhite made five saves for the Hawks and freshman Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) stopped 8 shots in goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers, now 3-5-4 and 0-1-3 in the NEC, are back in action Friday afternoon when they visit St. Francis (NY). Game time is 4:00 pm.
