Men's Soccer Opens NEC Play With 2-0 Loss to FDU

Teaneck, NJ - Samson Malijani scored two goals and Majdi Zaineh made four saves in goal as the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team blanked Sacred Heart, 2-0, in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
FDU's first goal came in the 23rd minute when Chris Faraone found himself with a breakaway. As he raced down the field, Faraone dished a long pass ahead of him to Malijani who lobbed the ball over the top of SHU goaltender Matt Jones for the first score of the game.
Malijani's second goal was an impressive indivudal effort. In the 76th minute, he found himself in a 1-on-1 break with a SHU defender. After dribbling around his man, Malijani ripped a shot past Jones to give FDU the insurance goal.
Sacred Heart had some chances, ringing up 10 shots on the day. Senior David Backman had two shots on goal while defenseman Matt Mones fired a team high three shots on the day. Jones kept the Pioneers in the game with six saves on the day.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday when they visit Central Connecticut. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
