Fairfield, CT - Senior defender Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweeden) scored the games only goal in the 17th minute as the Pioneers held on for a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon on Campus Field. Sacred Heart withstood a barrage of shots from the Mountaineers, 25 in total, and Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) made 10 saves to earn his third consecutive clean sheet. The win moves SHU to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Sacred Heart was outshot 9-5 in the first half but headed into the intermission on top 1-0 on Fredriksson's first goal of 2009. The 6-4 defender blasted a free kick from 35 yards out past the diving Mountaineer goalkeeper for what would prove to be the game winner.
Mount St. Mary's dominated the second half outshooting the Pioneers 16-5. Fait made seven of his 10 saves in the second frame to preserve the shutout and propel SHU to the 1-0 victory.
The Pioneers came out on top in a very physical game that saw five yellow cards and 32 total fouls. Sacred Heart will return to action next weekend as they travel to Pennsylvania for NEC tilts with Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA).
