Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart men’s soccer team fell to Iona 1-0 Saturday night under the lights at Campus Field. Giovanni Destasio scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick early in the first half. Norman Baer (Marl, Germany) nearly tied the game midway through the second half but his long range shot rang off the post. Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) made four saves in the loss while Iona goalkeeper Nils Binstock made three saves and earned the shutout.
Iona (5-1-2) earned the first scoring chance of the game winning a penalty kick in the 19th minute as Fait came off his line and fouled a Gaels attacker on a break away. Destasio buried the penalty kick in the right side of the net to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers had their own scoring opportunity at the 17:30 mark on a play from set pieces but Marcello Castro’s (Parana, Brazil) header sailed over the crossbar. With just three minutes remaining in the half Fait made one of his four first half saves at point blank range to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the half.
Sacred Heart (2-3-0) controlled the game most of the second half but could not find the equalizer. The Pioneers best opportunity came on Baer’s long range missile from 30 yards out that bounced off the woodwork. Brian Francolini (Ellington, CT) made a sliding attempt at the rebound but his shot went just wide. Baer had another chance to tie the game with 20 minutes to play after the Pioneers earned a free kick just outside the penalty box. The German midfielder’s shot would float just inches over the cross bar denying SHU on its last quality scoring chance of the game.
The Pioneers return to action at Campus Field on Tuesday, September 29 against Yale. The game can be heard live on www.sacredheartpioneers.com, game time is set for 4:00 pm.
