Fairfield, CT - Senior Neal Shapiro (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) scored two first half goals and the Sacred Heart men's soccer team beat Hartford 2-0 in the Pioneers home opener at Campus Field Wednesday. With the win the Pioneers improved to 3-3 while the Hawks dropped to 2-4-1.
Shapiro's first goal came in the 21st minute when he moved in unassisted and fired a shot past Hartford goalkeeper Ryan Carr to put the Pioneers up 1-0. Less then six minutes later, Shapiro took a crossing pass from senior Glenn Wilken (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and buried it in the top right corner of the net for his second goal of the game.
The game got more physical in the second half as the Pioneers were called for 13 fouls in the game and the Hawks had seven. Pioneer sophomore Dan North (Scunthorpe, England/Sir John Nelthorpe) received a yellow cared in the 47th minute.
The Pioneers out shot the Hawks eight to three in the first half en route to the two goal lead. The second half was played primarily in the midfield with Hartford garnering five shots and Sacred Heart three.
SHU freshman Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) made three saves in goal for his third shutout of the season.
Juniors Gorkem Katoglu and Kenniel Martin led the Hawks offensively with three and two shots, respectively. Carr made four saves in goal for Hartford
The Pioneers will now be off for a week. They will be back in action Wednesday, September 28th, when they visit UConn. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
