Orono, ME - Freshman forward Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT/Amity) scored with less than seven minutes to go as the Pioneers men's soccer team pulled off a huge 1-0 road win at Maine Friday.
The Black Bears and Pioneers battled to a 0-0 tie at half-time. Maine outshot the Pioneers six to three. Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon)had most of the work making three key saves, all of them from senior forward Adam Chenault . Senior Black Bear goalkeeper Chad Mongeon made one save on two first half shots.
The second half saw much of the same as the Black Bears held the ball much of the half. The Pioneers looked dangerous a few times on the counter attack, but Mongeon was up to the task. Maine's best chance came midway through the second half when sophomore forward Jimmy Velas was played in behind the Pioneer defense. Velas was able to beat the defender and loft a ball over Jones only to have it kicked off the line by a Sacred Heart defender.
In the 83rd minute, Sacred Heart broke the deadlock and took the lead for good when senior midfielder Gustavo Netto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/LaGuardia C.C.) picked off a pass from a Black Bear defender and put Tessitore in. Tessitore took a touch and blasted a shot to the lower corner past Mongeon.
With the loss Maine falls to 1-4-0 overall while Sacred Heart improves to 2-3-0. Neither team has started conference play yet. The Black Bears and Pioneers finished with nine shots apiece. Jones earned the shutout for the Pioneers with four saves while Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon made five saves in the loss.
With the win, the Pioneers complete their season opening road trip at 2-3. They will play their home opener against Hartford Wednesday. Game time is 3:30.
