Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, CT) scored with 28:08 remaining in the game and the Pioneers hung on to defeat Maine, 1-0, in men's soccer action Saturday at Campus Field. It was the Pioneers first win of the season.
Tessitore's game winner was set-up on a lob-pass from defender Anthony Anzevui (New Castle England). Tessitore took the ball just inside the 18 yard box, moved in and used a dribble fake to deke Maine goaltender Dereck Loisel. With Loisel down on the ground, Tessitore had a wide open net and, with a soft tap, finished off his first goal of the season.
After the goal, the Black Bears immediately had a chance to tie the game. Off the ensuing kick-off, sophomore Dimitri Anastasiou was able to get behind the Pioneer defense. However, his shot was stopped by Pioneer goaltender Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England), who made one of his two saves in securing his first shutout of the season.
Sacred Heart dominated the game offensively, out shooting Maine 18-8. Freshmen Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) had two beautiful shots that just missed the net. He fired a header that hit the crossbar with about 15 minutes left in the first half. Then, 15 minutes into the second half, Fredriksson got off another header that clanked off the post of the goal. Fredriksson finished the game with six shots, the most of any Pioneer.
Anastasiou and junior Jimmy Velas led the Black Bears attack with three shots apiece. Loisel made four saves in goal for Maine in the losing effort.
The Pioneers (1-1-1) are back in action Tuesday when they host Holy Cross. Game time at Campus Field is 4:00 pm.
