Loudonville, NY - The Sacred Heart men's soccer team shutout the Siena Saints 1-0 Tuesday afternoon. Nemanja Filimonovic (Belgrade, Serbia) netted the game winner on an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute. Sophomore Alex Fait (Ottawa, Canada) made six saves in goal and earned his first collegiate shutout.
Sacred Heart (1-1-0) grabbed the lead on Filimonovic's first goal of the year from a free kick that deflected off the hands of Saints keeper Steve Skonieczny and in with 13:01 to play in the first half. Fait kept the Pioneers on top going into the half making five of his six saves in the games first 45:00. The Saints outshot the Pioneers in the first half 9-4 and 22-11 overall.
Siena (2-1-0) took 13 shots in the second half but only one was on goal as the Saints were shutout for the first time this season. The game become physical in the later stages as both teams earned 11 fouls in the second half alone and three yellow cards were issued. The Pioneers would hold off Siena late as they earned their first win of 2009 and moved their record back to .500.
Sacred Heart returns to action Saturday September 19 in Worcester, MA as the Pioneers take on Holy Cross.
