Final Stats

Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored two goals and sophomore Svetozar Gladic (Novi Sad, Serbia) put the game away late with a penalty kick as Sacred Heart held off Iona, 3-1, in men's soccer action Monday at Campus Field. The win was the Pioneers first of the season.

The Pioneers jumped on the board early, as Fredriksson scored his first goal of the year in the sixth minute. Senior Ricarti Mendes (Campinas, Brazil) sent the ball across the field on an inbounds play and Fredriksson corralled it out of the air and booted it past Iona goalkeeper Nils Binstock for the score.

Fredriksson tallied his second goal of the day in the 34th minute. Mendes again sent the ball towards the goal from out of bounds and this time freshman Lusiano Dadario collected it. Dadario attempted to shoot the ball in the goal but flubbed the shot. However, the ball rolled right to Fredriksson who pounded it home to put SHU up 2-0. Dadario earned an assist, his first career point, on the play. Fredriksson had an opportunity at the hat trick early in the second half but was denied on a shot by Binstock.

The Gaels fought back in the game and finally got on the board in the 73rd minute when Fabian Contreras scored on a shot from thirty yards out to make the score 2-1. However, in the 89th minute, Gladic was taken down hard on an attack by an Iona player. The referee awarded him a penalty shot and he lobbed the ball over Blinstock's head and into the goal to seal the win for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart will participate in the Yale Tournament over the weekend. The Pioneers open play Friday against Dartmouth. Game time is set for 5:00 pm.
