Providence, RI - Matt Marcin scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute and Providence held Sacred Heart to just three shots enroute to a 1-0 win in season opening men's soccer action Friday afternoon.
The only tally of the game was set-up by some pretty passing by the Friars. Ryan Maduro hit Michael Pereira with a one touch pass and he fired a one-timer of his own over to Marcin. Marcin brought the ball within six yard and fired a shot that beat Pioneer goaltender Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) for the deciding marker.
The Friars controlled much of the offensive play throughout the game, outshooting the Pioneers 15-3. Senior Jason Tessitore (Orange, CT) and juniors Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Filipe Celikkaya (Almada, Portgual) accounted for the SHU offense.
Providence continued to create more chances in the second half, but Jones was able to hold them off with several excellent saves. Bryan Minogue nearly scored his first collegiate goal as his header off a corner kick was pushed aside by Jones in the 68th minute. In the 78th minute, Maduro played a through ball to Tim Ritter who was in on a breakaway, but Jones again made a diving save. In all, Jones finished with six saves.Jones made six saves in the cage for the Pioneers while Friars goaltender Tim Murrary needed to make just two saves to pickup the victory.
The Pioneers open their home schedule next Friday, September 5th, when they host Maine. Game time at the newly renovated Campus Field is set for 4:00 pm.
