FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart men's soccer head coach Joe Barroso announced the Pioneers' 2014 schedule on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers will play eight home games at Campus Field next season, taking on Marist in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Sacred Heart opens the season on Friday, August 29 at Delaware as part of the DoubleTree BWI Classic. The Pioneers will also play at UMBC on Sunday, August 31 in that tournament as well. UMBC won the America East Championship last season. A four-game stretch of road contests wraps up with games at Yale on Sept. 5 and at Siena on Sept. 9. Sacred Heart opens the home portion of the schedule against Marist on Sept. 13 at Campus Field. The Pioneers scored two goals in the first 10 minutes against the Red Foxes last season and hung on for a 2-1 win.
After a road match on Sept. 17 against Rhode Island, Sacred Heart hosts Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Stony Brook on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The Pioneers head back out on the road on Sept. 27 to take on UMass Lowell, followed by a match on Oct. 1 at NJIT. Sacred Heart opens its Northeast Conference slate on Friday, Oct. 10 against the defending NEC Tournament champions, St. Francis Brooklyn, at Campus Field. On Oct. 12, Sacred Heart travels to New Britain to face Central Connecticut, last season's regular season champions.
The Pioneers open a three-match homestand on Saturday, Oct. 18 against Bryant. Sacred Heart then hosts Saint Francis U on Friday, Oct. 24 and Robert Morris on Sunday, Oct. 26. The Pioneers' first four conference opponents all reached the NEC Tournament in 2013. Sacred Heart wraps up the regular season with two out of three matches on the road. The Pioneers play at LIU Brooklyn on Oct. 31, a team Sacred Heart defeated 1-0 at Campus Field last season. Sacred Heart closes the home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 4 against Columbia, then cap the season on Nov. 9 at Fairleigh Dickinson. The Pioneers shut out both LIU Brooklyn and FDU to cap the NEC season in 2013. The 2014 NEC Tournament will be held November 14 and 16.
