Simoes’ Game-Winner Puts Sacred Heart Over LIU Brooklyn 1-0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior Marcelo Simoes' (Ouro Fino, Brazil) goal at the hour mark Sunday was all the Sacred Heart men's soccer needed to beat LIU Brooklyn 1-0 at Campus Field. The win snaps the Pioneers' seven-game losing streak and is their first win in NEC play.
Sacred Heart (4-12, 1-5 NEC) dominated possession early, taking the first four shots of the game. Sophomore midfielder Mahmoud Kafel (Fairfield, Conn.) had two shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, but LIU Brooklyn (5-9-2, 2-3-1 NEC) goalkeeper Logan Keys stopped both of them. The Blackbirds didn't take their first shot of the game until the 21st minute and had just two in the first half. Kafel had another chance on goal in the 39th minute and just like earlier in the period, Keys made a save to keep the game scoreless. The Pioneers had a chance to get on the board in the 40th minute when Simoes hit a corner kick that found Konstantine Dekaneas (Ancaster, Ontario), but his subsequent header went wide. Both teams went to the locker room goalless, with Sacred Heart posting 10 shots in the half.
Kafel almost put the Pioneers in front in the 49th minute. The sophomore fired a shot from 15 yards out that hit and crossbar and went out of play. The Pioneers got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute. Ronaldo Vieira (Farmington, Mass.) fired a shot from the 18-yard box that was deflected by the LIU Brooklyn defense. Simoes pounced on the loose ball and fired it into the goal to make the score 1-0. The tally is Simoes' first of the season. The Blackbirds controlled possession for the next 15 minutes, with their best chance to level the match coming in the 74th minute. Nahuel Medina led a breakaway up the right side of the field and fired a shot from 18 yards out that was stopped by Sacred Heart goalkeeper Tucker Hackett (Madison, Conn.). Hackett made one more save in the second half to preserve the clean sheet and ensure the Pioneers' win.
Sacred Heart outshot LIU Brooklyn 15-9 for the game. The Blackbirds had four corner kicks to the Pioneers' two. Keys made four saves for LIU Brooklyn.
The Pioneers play their last road game of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 with a 7 p.m. game at Columbia.
