(Fairfield, CT) - Marcello Castro (Panana, Brazil) was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's All-America Team for the second time in his career, earning Third Team honors on defense for his outstanding final season as a Sacred Heart Pioneer.
The senior back led the Pioneers for the fourth straight year in goals, scoring a career high nine this season to place him second in the NEC. He finished with 20 points, good for third in the conference. Castro ends his brilliant career with 23 goals, earning him fifth on the all-time SHU list. His 23 career goals are third most at the Division I level for SHU, even more impressive considering he plays defense.
Castro is the fourth Pioneer in program history to earn All-American honors, but the first at the Division I level. Previous SHU All-Americans at the Division II level include Lawrence Taplah ('81, '82), Daniel Dos Santos ('90), and Allan Zuniga ('92). Castro also earned Third Team honors as a sophomore in 2010, joining Taplah as the only two-time All-American in SHU Men's Soccer history.
