FAIRFIELD, CT (September 7, 2005) - The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team and head coach Tom Mariano have announced the schedule for the upcoming 2006 season. For the second-straight season, the Pioneers will open the season against Colgate hosting the Red Raiders on Saturday, February 25th.
Sacred Heart will open play in the Colonial Athletic Conference for the fifth season when they start a string of six-straight games in late March by hosting the newest member, Robert Morris. SHU will also play host to reigning conference champion Towson (April 22) and Delaware (April 8), both 2005 NCAA Tournament participants.
The rest of the conference slate will take place on the road with stops at Villanova (April 1), Hofstra (April 5) and Drexel (April 15).
The non-conference portion of the 2006 slate will take them on the road to Colorado during spring break. The Pioneers will visit the United States Air Force Academy (Mar. 10) and the University of Denver (Mar. 12) in the early part of the season. SHU will also travel to nationally ranked UMass (Mar. 21) in their final tune-up before conference play.
The Pioneers will host seven games at Campus Field in 2006, including the Colgate game. Also making stops in Fairfield will be Manhattan (Mar. 4), Binghamton (Mar. 18) and Hartford (April 26) to round out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Coach Mariano will get his team prepared for the season with a pair of scrimmage games in February. SHU will travel to Albany (Feb. 11) and to UMBC (Feb. 18) before hosting Colgate on the 25th.
The CAA Tournament will take place in early May at the site of the highest seed. The top four teams in the league will qualify with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament at stake.
