Setting the Scene... For the second straight week, the Pioneers take to the field twice. Both games are on the road as SHU
travels to Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday and then heads to Lehigh on Saturday before a two week layoff until its next game.
Last Time Out... Senior attack Evan Morgan tallied a game tying goal in the final second of regulation before eventually netting the game winner in overtime to overtake Hartford, 7-6, on Campus Field Saturday night. The Pioneers trailed 6-3 at halftime, but senior goalie Tom Trgo turned away 12 Hawk shots to preserve the win. Senior Timmy Katz scored three times, twice in the second half, and added an assist for SHU.
About the Pioneers... Sacred Heart ended a four game losing streak by taking down Wagner, 10-5, last Wednesday before toppling Hartford in overtime on Saturday. Katz leads the 3-5 Pioneers in scoring with 29 points, 22 goals and seven assists. He has already passed his team-leading totals from 2009, 21 goals and seven assists. Senior Jon Flood is second on the team with 13 goals and four assists. Morgan has recorded nine scores and collected seven assists for 16 total points. In the cage, Trgo holds a 10.58 goals against average and has registered a .580 save percentage.
Scouting the Mountaineers... Mount St. Mary’s enters this afternoon’s game winners of their last three. Sophomore Cody Lehrer leads the 3-2 Mountaineers with 19 goals and two assists. Classmate Brett Schmidt is second in points with 14, seven goals and assists apiece. Fellow sophomore Bryant Schmidt has dished out a team-high nine helpers to go with three goals of his own. Junior T.C. DiBartolo has started all five games and owns a .527 save percentage and 10.73 GAA.
Scouting the Mountain Hawks... Freshman Alex Drake scored the game winning goal in overtime to give Lehigh a 16-15 win over Binghamton on Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks improved to 5-5 with the win. Freshman Dante Fantoni leads the team in scoring with 14 goals and 11 assists. Sophomore Cameron Lao-Gosney is second in point with 24, on 18 scores and six helpers. Freshman David DiMaria has a team-high 15 assists to go with seven goals. In the net, freshman Dan Carr has made 87 saves and has posted a 10.15 GAA. This will be the first ever matchup between Lehigh and Sacred Heart.
vs. The Mount All-Time... Mount St. Mary’s has won all three games in the series’ history. The two teams have not played since 2001 and all three contests were held between 2000 and 2001. The Mountaineers took the first game 9-8 in Fairfield in 2000 followed by a 15-10 win in Emmitsburg the next season. In May of 2001, the two teams met in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Mount defeated SHU 11-9.
Last Time vs. MSM... The #2 Mount St. Mary’s lacrosse team took down #3 Sacred Heart in the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship at Marist College on May 5, 2001. It was the last post season game for the Pioneers. Paul Lyons was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Up Next... After 13 days without a game the Pioneers hit the road again for a 2:00 pm contest at Bryant on Saturday April 17.
In the Polls... Sacred Heart received votes in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Poll. It is the fourth time, and third straight week, this season that the Pioneers have received votes in this poll. SHU has also been ranked as high as sixth in the NEILA Coaches’ Poll Top Eight.
Top 30... Trgo ranks eighth in the country, out of 49 eligible goalies, with a save percentage of .584. Katz is in a five-way tie for 16th in goals per game with 2.75 and tied for 29th in the country for points per game at 3.63 through games completed March 28.
