Pioneers Aim to End Four Game Slide at Wagner

Setting the Scene... The Pioneers are in action twice this week as they stay on the road to face Wagner on Wednesday at 1:00 pm before returning home to play intrastate rival Hartford at 7:00 pm Saturday.
Last Time Out... Sacred Heart fell to #6 Hofstra on the road this past weekend. Senior Timmy Katz scored four goals on six shots. Fellow senior Evan Morgan and freshman Bryan Badolato each added another goal for the Red & White.
About the Pioneers... Sacred Heart has dropped its last four games since defeating Presbyterian on February 21. Katz is the leading scorer for the 1-5 Pioneers with 18 goals and four assists. Senior Jon Flood is second in scoring with 10 goals and four assists, followed by classmate Evan Morgan with six scores and a team-high seven helpers. In the cage, senior Tom Trgo has a .561 save percentage and 12.52 goals against average.
Scouting the Seahawks... Wagner is currently 0-5 on the season. Freshman Cody Isdaner leads the Seahawks in scoring with seven goals and two assists. Sophomore Mike Hurley has a team-high four assists and three goals of his own. Senior Michael Gulkin and sophomore Peter Rubin have split time in net with Gutkin making three of the five starts.
Scouting the Hawks... Coming off a 10-6 win over Holy Cross Hartford is 2-4 on the year. Sophomore Aidan Genik has a team-best 21 points, 18 goals and three assists. Freshman Jared Franze is the team’s second leading scorer with 12 goals. Sophomore Ryan Compitello has tallied a team-leading 11 assists to go with four scores. Classmate Scott Bement owns a .481 save percentage and 11.58 GAA.
All-Time vs. Wagner... The Pioneers are a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Seahawks. The two teams met for the first time in 2000 as the Pioneerswon 24-3. SHU has won three games on the road as well as three on Campus Field. The Pioneers have won all six games by an average margin of 14.17.
Last Time vs. Wagner... Last season the Pride came away with a 6-5 win at Campus Field. Card scored twice in the win for Hofstra. Katz led all goal scorers with four.
All-Time vs. U-Hart... After coming up short in their first four meeting with the Hawks, the Pioneers have taken six of the last seven contests. Overall SHU holds a 7-4 advantage in the series due to winning the first contest between the teams by forfeit.
Last Time vs. U-Hart... In West Hartford, Sacred Heart came away with a 9-8 overtime victory. Katz scored the game-winner, his second goal of the game. Zach Frank made 11 saves.
Up Next... The second half of the schedule starts with three straight road contests beginning at Mount St. Mary’s at 3:00 pm on March 31.
In the Polls... Sacred Heart received votes in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Poll. It is the third time this season that the Pioneers have received votes in this poll. SHU has also been ranked as high as sixth in the NEILA Coaches’ Poll Top Eight.
Weekly Honors... Senior attack Timmy Katz was named the Turfer NEILA Player of the week for the week ending February 21. Katz scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists in a 13-6 win over Presbyterian.
Top 50... Trgo ranks 14th in the country, out of 49 eligible goalies, with a save percentage of .561. Katz is in a five-way tie for 12th in goals per game with 3.00 and 29th in the country for points per game at 3.67 through games completed March 21.
