Pioneers Open CAA Schedule... The Sacred Heart Pioneers will welcome the Colonial Athletic Association's newest member to Campus Field Saturday afternoon as they host Robert Morris in their league opener. The Pioneers are looking to get the conference slate off on the right foot and snap a six-game losing skid with a win. The Colonials come in losers of six-straight themselves including their last three in CAA play.
The Series... The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 1-0. SHU posted an 18-8 win over the Colonials in Delray Beach, Florida last season, Robert Morris's inaugural season of competition. The two teams will meet this season both as members of the CAA.
Up Next... Sacred Heart hits the road for the next two conference games, traveling to Villanova on April 1st and Hofstra on April 5th.
Last Meeting with RMU... Sacred Heart's Matthew Robideau collected seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the Pioneer men's lacrosse team to a commanding 18-8 win over Robert Morris in Delray Beach, Florida on March 21st, 2005. The Pioneers scored 18 times and was four-of-six man-up in earning the win. The Pioneers held a 6-2 advantage at the break and came out on fire to start the second half as Rory Morse scored three-straight goals to push the lead to 9-2 at the 11:56 mark. Robert Morris would answer as the Colonial offense rang off four-straight while holding the Pioneers scoreless for over seven minutes. That would be as close as the Colonials could get as SHU outscored Robert Morris 9-2 the rest of the way to earn the win. In goal, SHU's Thomas Hind made four saves in earning the win while RMU's Jason Dockum made 12 saves in taking the loss. In addition to Robideau's seven points, Kiel Adams finished with three scores and an assist .
Scouting the Colonials... Robert Morris is 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the CAA heading into Saturday's game. The Colonials lone win came against Seton Hill, 9-1, in the season-opener. Frank Keel leads the team with 10 points on eight goals and two assists. Jason Dockum is the team's top-goalie with 45 saves and a 9.76 gaa. TJ Sarnese lead the team in the face-off circle with 31 wins and 15 ground balls.
SHU Last Time Out... The 10th-ranked UMass men's lacrosse team scored nine consecutive goals in the second half to break an 8-8 tie and surge past Sacred Heart on the way to a 17-9 win on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers scored twice at the end of the half and three-straight to start the third to erase an 8-3 deficit but couldn't keep the momentum going as they fall to 0-6 on the year. Massachusetts junior Brett Garber scored three of his four goals in the 9-0 run as the Minutemen improve to 5-1 on the season. After the SHU 5-0 run, UMass scored nine straight goals over a span of 16:51 beginning with back-to-back goals by Garber, 57 seconds apart putting the Minutemen ahead for good at 10-8 with 3:01 left in the third quarter. Stabert scored nine seconds later off a face-off win by Jake Deane, who fed Brian Jacovina to make it 11-8. SHU's rally started with scores from senior Kevin Walker and sophomore Billy Fuchs in the second and kept rolling in the third off the sticks of Adams, Walker again and freshman Dylan Bittlingmaier to knot the game up at 8-8. Sacred Heart's Kiel Adams scored his team-high third goal of the game to end the 9-0 UMass run with 18 seconds left in regulation and the 17-9 final. UMass controlled the face-off circle with Jake Deane winning 20-of-26 and scooping a game-high nine groundballs. SHU's Jim Millhausen got the start and made 10 saves into the third quarter.
SHU in the CAA Rankings... The Pioneers are sixth in the league in scoring with 7.8 goals per game. SHU is fifth in the rankings in assists per game (5.17 apg) and points per game (13.0 ppg). As a team, Sacred Heart is third best in the league on the penalty kill, allowing just five goals in 23 attempts (.783). Junior Peter Greco is sixth in the league in scoring with 15 points (2.50 ppg). Senior Kiel Adams is eighth with 14 points (2.33 ppg). Adams is sixth in goals per game (1.83 gpg). Greco is fifth in assists per game (1.17 apg) followed by sophomore Tony Tanzi (1.00 apg). Tanzi is also fifth in the league in ground balls, with 4.33 per outing. Senior Thomas Hind is fourth in saves per game at 7.67.
2006 Schedule... The Pioneers will play a 14 game schedule in 2006 that features eight teams currently ranked in the USILA and Inside Lacrosse Top-20 polls. Maryland, UMass, Delaware, Denver, Hofstra, Colgate, Binghamton and Towson were all ranked in this week's polls. SHU opens the six game CAA schedule on March 25th hosting new member Robert Morris. The Pioneers will play Maryland and Binghamton for the first time in school history.
Pioneer History... This is the 16th season of men's lacrosse at Sacred Heart. The Pioneers post a mark of 100-110 (.476) in their 16 year history. Head Coach Tom Mariano is the program's longest tenured coach in his 10th season at the helm. SHU begins it's fifth season of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association, one of the premier lacrosse leagues in the NCAA. Prior to joining the league, the Pioneers spent two seasons competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
