FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team led 7-0 at the intermission and held on for an 8-6 win over St. John's Saturday night on Campus Field. The win snapped a five game losing streak for the Pioneers, who improved to 4-10, while the Red Storm dropped to 5-8.
Senior midfielder Joe Caridi (East Northport, NY) found the back of the net three times, while classmate Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY) added two to give the Pioneers a five goal advantage by the end of the first quarter. Flood added a third midway through the second, followed by an unassisted Timmy Katz goal, his 30th of the season.
Senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) made 10 saves in the first half to keep St. John's off the board.
The Red Storm got back two goals in the third quarter with scored from sophomore attacks Harry Kutner and Charlie Holenstein. In the final frame, the Red Storm climbed within one goal of SHU as junior Terence Leach netted his second of the game with 3:51 to play.
After a penalty on Saint John's with 22 seconds to go, Pioneer senior attack Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) put the game away with his 13th score of the year.
For the game Trgo made 19 saves, while Red Storm freshman netminder Jeff Lowman stopped 16.
Saint John's outshot Sacred Heart 46-33 and collected 40 groundballs, while the Pioneers had only 33. Each team scored twice on the extra-man in eight chances.
Sacred Heart closes the book on the 2010 season with a road contest at Duke on May 9 at 2:00 pm.
