Men's Lax Loses Tight Contest to RMU, 12-10
April 24, 2010
FAIRFIELD, CT – The Sacred Heart University men’s lacrosse team suffered a 12-10 setback to Robert Morris on Campus Field, Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 3-9 on the year, while the Colonials improved to 9-4.
SHU got ahead early with goals from senior attackmen Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) and Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY). RMU answered with three straight scores and led 3-2 at the completion of the first quarter.
In the second, Flood netted his second of the day on a man-down situation to tie the game at three. Junior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby soon put RMU back up by one with his second of the game. The Pioneers took a 6-4 lead into halftime with goals by senior Joe Caridi (East Northport, NY), and sophomore Chris Casey (Duxbury, MA) and Matt King (Brewster, NY) before the close of the frame.
Flood found the back of the net for a third time, midway through the third quarter, to give SHU a three goal lead, its largest of the game. Led by two scores from junior Trevor Moore and one from red-shirt junior Patrick Smith the Colonials tied the game at seven before the end of the period.
Trailing by one, seven minutes into the final stanza, Pioneer senior goalie Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) fielded a groundball in front of his own net and fired the ball down field. RMU netminder Dillon Pope was nowhere to be found and Trgo’s clearing pass rolled between the pipes for the equalizing score. A little more than three minutes later King gave the lead back to Sacred Heart with his second goal of the contest.
Less than one minute later the Pioneers had possession in their attacking zone and appeared to be awarded a timeout from the officials. As both team’s benches entered the field of play the referees signaled that play would continue. With Trgo chasing back to the cage, Tao-Brambleby scored on an uncontested shot to knot the game at nine.
RMU went on to outscore SHU 3-1 in the final four minutes to seal the victory. For the game, The Colonials outshot the Pioneers 42-34.
Smith, Tao-Brambleby, and Moore all recorded hat tricks for RMU. SHU senior attack Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) posted three assists to increase his team-leading total to 13.
Trgo stopped 20 shots for Sacred Heart, his second highest single game total of the season. For Robert Morris, Pope finished the game with eight saves.
The Pioneers remain at home as they take on Quinnipiac on Campus Field at 7:00 pm this Tuesday.
