FAIRFIELD, CT (April 6, 2005) - The Hofstra University men's lacrosse team scored five-straight goals to start the game and led 11-4 at the half en route to a 14-10 win at Sacred Heart Wednesday afternoon. The #19 ranked Pride got four goals from Athan Ianucci as they improve to 4-6 overall and earn their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season. The Pioneers fall to 4-5 with their fourth-straight loss and 0-2 in league play.
The Pride dominated play early on, out shooting the Pioneers 18-4 in the first quarter and 28-8 in the half. Ryan Lucas got Hofstra on the board first with his first of the day at 12:18. Two goals by Chris Unterstein and scored by John Keysor and Ryan Vilar gave the Pride a 5-0 lead with 6:41 to go in the first quarter.
SHU's Kiel Adams (Rome, NY) snapped the streak with an unassisted tally at 5:54 but Hofstra came right back and made it 5-1 on a Rob Bonaguro score from Lucas. Adams scored again, this time man-up, with 1:35 left in the quarter but Hofstra once again had an answer as Tim Treubig notched his eighth goal of the year, again from Lucas.
Hofstra made it 8-2 off a SHU miscue just 25 seconds into the second quarter. SHU's Mike Killeen (Commack, NY) picked up a lose ball and the Pioneers tried to clear but an errant Killeen pass missed it's mark and ended up in the back of the SHU cage to give the Pride another goal. Ianucci followed with his first of the day just over three minutes later and Hofstra went up 9-2. After a SHU goal, Ianucci and Vilar tacked on two more scores to match the Pride's biggest lead of the day, 11-3.
After a late second quarter goal cut the lead to 11-4 at the half, the Pioneers came out determined in the second half to claw their way back into the game. SHU opened the half with goals by freshman Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) and Adams, his third, to get to within 11-5 with 5:58 to go in the quarter. Hofstra answered with Ianucci's third of the day but another SHU score before the end of the quarter got the Pioneers to within 12-7. Sacred Heart's Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY) brought SHU to within four, 12-8, just 53 seconds into the fourth, scoring unassisted.
After another Pride goal, Robideau struck again unassisted to again cut it to four but Hofstra would answer once again. Ianucci buried his fourth with 5:30 left to put Hofstra up 14-9 before a late SHU goal produced the final 14-10 score.
In addition to Ianucci's four goals, Unterstein finished with three scores and three assists. Lucas finished with two goals and two assists and Keysor scored once and passed out two helpers. James Tuohy made eight saves in earning the win for Hofstra.
Adams finished with three goals for Sacred Heart while Robideau scored twice and assisted on another. Junior Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 10 saves in the cage for SHU.
The Pioneers will host Drexel University this Saturday, April 9th at 1:00 pm.
