Riverdale, NY - Three different Jaspers scored two goals and John Geagan made 10 saves in the cage as Manhattan College posted a 10-5 victory over Sacred Heart in men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Gaelic Park. Senior Dan Casciano (Syracuse, NY) scored three goals for Sacred Heart in the loss.
Manhattan's Joe Variano got the Jaspers off to a quick start by scoring two goals inthe first five minutes of the game. Freshman Dennis Gannon (Huntington, NY) also scored in that period to put the Pioneers on the board. James Synoweiz found the back of the net with 8:22 left to make it 3-1 Manhattan after one quarter.
Casciano scored his first goal at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter to bring the Pioneers within one. However, Manhattan would take a two goal lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Kelly Mahon less than two minutes later.
The Pioneers came out of the lockerroom after the intermission quickly, as Casciano found the back of the net twice in the first six minutes to tie the score at four. Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) and Nicholas Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) each had assists on the goals. The Jaspers responded, however, as Tyler Sabens and Justin Jensen each scored in the final two minutes of the quarter to give Manhattan a 6-4 lead heading to the final period.
After taking control of the game late in third quarter, the Jaspers ran away with it in the final period, outscoring the Pioneers 4-1. Sal Ferroto found the back if the net twice in the first three minutes to help the Jaspers open up an 8-4 lead. Matt Ferino got one goal back for the Pioneers but Synoweiz and Angelo Marrano iced the game for Manhattan with goals in the final minutes.
Manhattan out-shot Sacred Heart 36-26. Sophomore Zack Frank (Islip Terrace, NY) made 8 saves in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart continues a four game road trip with a date at CAA rival Towson Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
