Pioneer Comeback Falls Short at Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, MD – The Sacred Heart University men’s lacrosse team staged a late surge at Mount St. Mary’s Wednesday afternoon, but ultimately came up short, 9-8. The Pioneers trailed by four with 2:17 remaining. Senior attack Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) would net two goals and classmate Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) added one before the final horn sounded, but SHU was still one goal shy of forcing an extra frame.
The Mount claimed a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period by sophomore Jake Willertz with 2:40 remaining. Both offenses began to click as the Pioneers found the back of the net four times and the Mountaineers three.
Mount St. Mary’s seemed to take complete control of the game in the third quarter as the outscored Sacred Heart 4-0. Sophomore Bryant Schmidt scored twice and added an assists in the period. It was in the fourth stanza that the Pioneers mounted their comeback. However, a goal by Mountaineer freshman Andrew Scalley at the 2:53 mark was just enough to keep SHU from tying the game.
Willertz led the Mount with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Brett Schmidt added two goals of his own. For the Pioneers, freshman Bryan Badolato (West Islip, NY) netted a pair of goals and collected an assist. Senior Joe Caridi (East Northport, NY) added a goal and an assist.
Junior T.C. Dibartolo provided 13 saves in the cage for the Mountaineers to earn the victory. In net for SHU, senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) stopped 10 shots in the loss.
The Pioneers outshot Mount St. Mary’s for the game, 32-29 and also held a 32-26 advantage on groundballs.
The Mount improved to 4-2 on the season, while Sacred Heart dropped to 3-6.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday as they stay on the road for a 2:00 pm contest at Lehigh.
