FAIRFIELD, CT (March 25, 2006) - Sacred Heart senior Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) scored a career-high five goals and assisted on two others to lead the Pioneers to a 15-9 win over visiting Robert Morris in their Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse opener Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers snap a six-game slide to open the season with the win and are 1-0 in the league while Robert Morris falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the CAA.
Robideau scored the first of his five goals on the Pioneers first offensive possession, letting rip off a feed from sophomore Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY). After a RMU marker tied it up, Robideau started a four-goal run with a man-up goal at 10:57. Freshman defender Anthony Mortali (Branford, CT) made it 3-1 when he picked off an errant pass off the face-off, raced in and scored his first career goal.
Freshman Dylan Bittlingmaier (Pittsford, NY) and sophomore Billy Fuchs (Merrick, NY) made it 5-1, with Fuchs finishing the run with the Pioneers second man-up goal of the quarter. The Colonials cut into the lead with scores from Brandon Johnson and Andrew Watt to make it 5-3 but Robideau struck again to end the quarter, tallying his third marker with 1:58 on the clock from Brendan McAuley (Hicksville, NY).
Robideau's third started another SHU run that spilled over into the second quarter as senior Kevin Walker (Rochester, NY) buried a feed from freshman Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY). Robideau's followed with his fourth and Walker scored unassisted to put SHU up 8-3 with just under six minutes to play in the half. Robert Morris tacked on their only goal of the quarter at 1:45 as Watt scored his second unassisted goal to send the game into the break, 9-3.
The Colonials jumped out quickly in the second half, making a game of it with two quick scores after winning the first two face-offs, cutting the SHU lead to 9-6. The Pioneers halted the run on senior Kiel Adam's (Rome, NY) first of three goals on the day. RMU tacked another on but SHU closed the quarter with a pair of tallies from Karl and Adams and opened the fourth with junior Joseph Camillo's (Weymouth, MA) first career-goal to go up 13-7 with 13:28 to play.
Scores by Watt and Mike Flemming pulled the Colonials to within 13-9 with just over 10 minutes to play but the Pioneer defense clamped down shutting down their attack the rest of the way. Robideau tacked on his fifth goal at 3:31 to complete his seven point afternoon.
Robideau's seven points matches his career-high, set against the Colonials last season. Karl finished with five points on a goal and four helpers. Adams notched three scores to give him a team-best 14 on the year. Junior Joe Cavagnaro (Kinnelon, NJ) won 11 face-offs and picked up a team-high five ground balls.
Senior Jim Millhausen (Arnold, MD) earned his first-career victory in the cage for the Pioneers, stopping 11 shots on the day.
The Pioneers are back in CAA action next Saturday when they travel to Villanova for a 1 pm start.
