FAIRFIELD, CT (March 20, 2004) - The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-10 decision to visiting Dartmouth College Saturday afternoon. Dartmouth got three goals and three assists from Russell Radebaugh to improve to 3-1 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 0-5.
SHU struck first as sophomore Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) scored unassisted just 29 second in to play. The Big Green answered back with four-straight over the next four minutes, two by sophomore Jamie Coffin, to take a 4-1 lead. Pioneers sophomore James Hinkson (Whitby, Ontario) got SHU back on the board with his first of the season but three more Big Green goals gave Dartmouth a 7-3 lead after one quarter of play.
Sacred Heart got to within 7-4 at the start of the second on Robideau's second of the day but Dartmouth would answer back on a goal by Lucas Robertson. SHU once again cut it to a three goals deficit when at 7:57, senior Ben Giamichael (Cortland, NY) found the back of the net on a pass from junior Dana White (Gorham, ME). The Big Green built the lead back to four, 9-5, on Tom Daniels unassisted goal at 4:37. The score would hold at 9-5 into the half.
Neither team mustered much offense in the third, with each side netting just one goal. Dartmouth's Ryan Denehy scored his only goal of the game 20 seconds into the fourth quarter on the man-up advantage to give Dartmouth a 10-6 advantage. SHU's Jonathan Corto (Orchard Park, NY) got the Pioneers to within four just over two minutes later off a pass from Giamichael. That was as close as SHU would get as Dartmouth rattled off four straight over a five minute span to put the game out of reach.
In addition to Radebaugh's six points he also led the team with six ground balls and was a perfect 7-of-7 on face-offs. Coffin and Ben Grinnell each had four points apiece on three goals and an assist. Jake Dwyer finished with a goal and two assists while Daniels and Alec Hufnagel scored a goal with an assist apiece. Goalkeeper Andrew Goldstein recorded six saves to pick-up the win.
For Sacred Heart, White and senior Jorge Bravo (Long Beach, NY) each had two goals. White also passed out an assist for three points in the loss. Giamichael added two assists to his goal for a three-point afternoon. Junior Blake Reardon (St. Michael, MN) picked-up five groundballs while winning 10 face-offs. Sophomore Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 11 saves in the cage in taking the loss.
SHU struggled on the man-up advantage, finishing 0-of-nine on the day. The Pioneers were also hurt by 27 turnovers while being outshot, 38-29.
The Pioneers return to action this Tuesday, March 23rd as they travel to the University of Massachusetts for a 3:00 pm start
