VESTAL, N.Y. (March 15, 2008) - For the second-straight game the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team found themselves in a 9-3 second half hole but this time the Pioneers bid for another comeback win fell just short, losing 9-8 at Binghamton University Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers went into the fourth quarter chasing six goals but came up one score shy of sending the game to overtime as they absorb their first loss of 2008.

Binghamton junior Chris Mulheron scored a game-high six points, tallying four goals and a pair of assists leading the Bearcats to their second win in a row. The Pioneers, who received votes in this week's USILA Coaches Top-20 poll, fall to 3-1 on the season.

The Bearcats controlled much of the early action, bursting out to a 5-0 lead two and a half minutes into the second quarter. Mulheron scored twice to start the second, both coming in a span of 1:46, giving Binghamton a 5-0 lead with 12:24 left to go before halftime. The Pioneer offense finally got on the board on a pair of back-to-back goals off the sticks of junior Bobby Rushton (West Islip, NY) and sophomore Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY).

Binghamton midfielder Stephen Smith finished of the first half scoring at the 8:33 mark of the second quarter, scoring off a feed from Mulheron as the Bearcats took a 6-2 advantage into the half. SHU got the third quarter off on the right foot as senior captain Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) scored unassisted but the rest of the quarter was all Bearcats as Mulheron tacked on two more along with a marker from Kevin McCarthy for a six-goal lead, 9-3, after three.

SHU finally put it all together over the final 15 minutes staging a furious rally as five different players scored on the comeback trail. Junior Dan Casciano (Syracuse, NY) got the rally started at 12:04 with an unassisted goal followed by an unassisted Katz goal at 8:30 to pull within 9-5.

Sophomore Evan Morgan (Asburn, VA) cut it to three off a feed from junior Nick Hautau (South Salem, NY) with six minutes to go and Katz set-up the last two Pioneer goals. Tanzi finished a Katz feed at 4:32 but the Pioneers couldn't manage their eighth until 36 seconds were left in the game, a Rushton score. The Bearcats were able to take the ensuing face-off and ward off any Pioneers attempt at the tying score and escape with the win.

Tanzi, Katz and Rushton all scored two goals each in the loss. Katz added a pair of assists to his stat totals. Junior Zach Smith (Chittenden, VT) won 12 of 18 face-offs and had four ground balls.

The Pioneers are at home for a pair of games this coming week, hosting UMass on Tuesday, March 18th and Robert Morris in their CAA opener on Saturday, March 22nd.
