Sacred Heart Men's Lacrosse Falls to #11 Denver, 12-6
March 6, 2004
FAIRFIELD, CT (March 6, 2004) - The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team fell to the #11-ranked University of Denver Pioneers, 12-6, in the first meeting between the two teams Saturday afternoon. Denver received four goals from junior Erik Swanson en route to their third win of the year. SHU's Christian Lynch (Northport, NY) had three goals for the Pioneers who fall to 0-3 with the loss.
Sacred Heart struck first as Lynch buried a pass from freshman Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) at 11:54. Denver wasted little time in answering, scoring twice in the next 43 seconds. Junior Matt Brown picked-up his sixth goal of the year followed by junior Darren Sasaki-Scanlon who scored on the man-up advantage. Lynch pulled SHU even, 2-2, on his second of the day off a feed from freshman Kevin Kimball (Framingham, MA).
Denver's Swanson gave his team the lead for good with just 22 seconds left, burying a feed from Sasaki-Scanlon. UD kept the momentum going into the second quarter extending their lead to 5-2 on Swanson's second goal of the day and freshman Drew Sherman's third of the season.
SHU answered with a man-up goal by freshman Jonathan Corto (Orchard Park, NY) but two more goals by Swanson over the next three minutes gave Denver a solid 7-3 advantage. Sacred Heart was able to draw within three at the half as sophomore Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) scored on a feed from senior Jorge Bravo (Long Beach, NY).
Sacred Heart cut the led to just two goals twice in the third quarter. Lynch picked-up his third of the day at 10:37 on the clock. Denver came right back on their next possession and scored off the stick of sophomore Greg Weigel, unassisted at 9:33. SHU answered the call once again as Greco scored the prettiest goal of the game, slashing across the middle, taking a pass from Kimball and in one motion backhanding his shot over his shoulder and past UD goalkeeper Scott Davidson.
Unfortunately for the SHU Pioneers, Greco's goal would be the last of the day as Denver ran off two-straight to end the third, with Geoff Snider and Adam Swain scoring 30 seconds apart late in the quarter to build the lead back to four, 10-6. Denver shut Sacred Heart out in the fourth quarter and tacked on a pair of goals to put the game out of reach.
In addition to Swanson's four goal day, Weigal finished with two goals and an assist for three points. Sasaki-Scanlon tallied two assists to go with his goal for three points while Scott Davidson finished with a goal and an assist. Sanders was outstanding in goal for UD, making 11 saves to pick-up his third win of the year.
For SHU, Lynch's three goals led the way followed by Greco who had a goal and two helpers. Kimball was the other multi-point scorer with two assists in the loss. Sophomore goalie Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY) made 10 saves in taking the loss.
The SHU Pioneers return to action next Saturday, March 13th when they take on Butler in Boca Raton, FL at 12 noon.
