Sacred Heart Pioneers Drop Home Opener, 22-8, to Bryant University

Fairfield, Conn. (February 22, 2009) - The Bryant Bulldogs got a combined 17 goals from their starting attack unit on the road to a 22-8 win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers Sunday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers got two goals apiece from senior Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY) and junior Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) in the loss. The win marks Bryant's first as a Division I lacrosse program.
The Bulldogs (1-1) got 11 points from Zack Greer who scored six times and dished out five assists to lead all players. Bryan Kaufmann matched Greer with six markers of his own to go with an assist. Kevin Hoagland rounded out the scoring trifecta with five goals and a pair of assists to give the Bryant starting attackers 25 of the team 39 total points in the win. The Bulldogs spread the rest of their five goals among five different players.
Hoagland opened the scoring at 13:28 followed by Karl's first at 10:12. From there the Bulldogs ran off a 5-0 rally that carried over into the second quarter. Hoagland buried a pair on the run while Kaufmann capped it off with a man-up tally at 10:09 for a 6-1 lead.
SHU (0-2) ended the run with back-to-back goals by Katz, right off the ensuing face-off, and senior Dan Casciano (Syracuse, NY). Casciano buried a feed from Karl at 5:50 to cut the Bulldog lead in half, 6-3. Bryant ended the half with two-straight as Greer picked up his first career-goal in a Bulldog uniform followed by a Greg Lehane marker for an 8-3 lead at the break.
Bryant pushed their lead to 11-3 out of the half with goals by Hoagland, Kaufmann and Gary Crowley, man-up. Katz and senior Bobby Rushton (West Islip, NY) ended the Pioneer drought with goals at 8:14 and 4:55 but the Bulldogs put the game away with a 6-0 jaunt into the fourth quarter. Greer spearheaded the rally with three-straight and a fourth on the run to lead 19-6 with 11:42 to go. The Pioneers closed out their scoring in the fourth quarter on goals by Karl, junior Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY) and freshman Dennis Gannon (Huntington, NY).
As a team, Bryant finished four-of-five on man-up opportunities and tacked on a man-down goal as well. The Bulldogs held a 55-30 advantage on shots and a 48-30 edge in the groundball battle. Andy Hennessey went 21-29 on face-offs with a team-high eight grounders.
Katz added an assist to his two goals while Karl passed out two helpers to go with his two goals on the afternoon. Senior Zach Smith (Chittenden, VT) picked up eight grounders off face-offs.
The Pioneers will head out to Colorado for their next two games, taking on Denver on Saturday, February 28th and Air Force on Sunday, March 1st.
