SOMERSET, NJ – Sophomore defender Austin Pavone of Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse was an integral force in last weekend's overtime victory and was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Pavone's efforts against Providence's offense restricted the BIG EAST member to just single digits as the Pioneers edged the foe, 10-9.
The sophomore had a career afternoon after picking up a personal-best three ground balls and causing four Friar miscues. His four caused turnovers were one shy of the Friars' total as a team and almost half of his team's production. Moreover, two of his tallies were registered in the fourth quarter.
The local product influenced a pivotal PC turnover giving light to SHU. His activity ultimately led to the hosts' game-tying tally over the BIG EAST's preseason third favorite.
SHU is 4-1 on the year and will look to continue its winning momentum Thursday, March 8 at Vermont.
