BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team fell victim to an 8-1 run in the second half Saturday to the Vermont Catamounts at Virtue Field, falling 13-9 to move to 1-6 on the season.
Senior midfielder Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the Pioneers with four points on two goals and two assists. Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) scored twice for Sacred Heart as Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.), Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.), and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) each recorded a goal and an assist. Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) made 17 saves in goal.
Vermont (5-3) scored two minutes into Saturday's game as Graham Horvath buried an Ian MacKay pass into the back of the net. The Catamounts then took a 2-0 lead 1:07 later on a Dyson White tally. Sacred Heart (1-6) got on the board at the 10:48 mark when Brian Masi put in a Matt Gannon feed to make the score 2-1. Horvath put Vermont's lead back to two, 3-1, 10 seconds later off the faceoff. The Catamounts tacked on another goal with 3:47 left in the quarter when Andrew Buckanavage dodged to the crease and put home a John Everett pass. Cody Marquis got on the scoresheet for the Pioneers with 1:52 to play in the first, cutting to the crease and scoring to get Sacred Heart back within two at 4-2.
After a defensive start to the second quarter, Vermont got its lead back to three with 5:47 to play in the half. Ian MacKay scored with an assist to Patrick Clark, making the score 5-2. Sacred Heart responded with 4:31 remaining in the period when Alex Miller scored from five yards out to make the score 5-3. Mike Mawdsley then got Sacred Heart to within one with his man-up goal at the 3:08 mark, putting the score at 5-4.
Vermont opened the scoring in the third quarter as MacKay scored 53 seconds into the period to give the Catamounts a 6-4 lead. The Pioneers got that goal back at the 12:52 mark on Mawdsley's second goal of the game, assisted by Miller. Alex Dodge then tied the game 6-6 with 11:43 to play in the third, scoring unassisted from 10 yards out. Sacred Heart took its first lead of the game at the 7:59 mark when Gannon scored from his knees right in front of the crease to give the Pioneers a 7-6 advantage.
The lead would not last long for Sacred Heart. MacKay scored 41 seconds later to tie the game at 7-7 before Bucknavage gave Vermont an 8-7 lead with 0:45 left in the third quarter. Horvath capped off a 3-0 Catamounts run with a goal 20 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving Vermont a 9-7 advantage. Miller cut the deficit to one before Vermont went on another scoring spree. The Catamounts scored four straight goals in the span of 4:12 to take a 13-8 lead with 4:15 to play. The Pioneers mustered one goal from Andrew Newbold in the final four minutes to make the final score 13-9.
Vermont outshot Sacred Heart 49-35 for the game and had 41 ground balls to the Pioneers' 28. MacKay and Horvath each had four goals for the Catamounts.
Sacred Heart opens Northeast Conference play next Saturday, March 29 at Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
