FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team will host a scrimmage with Keio University from Japan on Thursday, October 10 at 8 p.m. on Campus Field.
The scrimmage will give Pioneer fans an early glimpse at the upcoming season's squad, while also being able to see an international team come to Sacred Heart. Keio will be doing a week-long tour in the United States, playing seven different collegiate programs.
"We're all extremely excited for the opportunity to share our culture with a team from another country," said head coach Jon Basti. "We're also excited to be able to put Sacred Heart in a position to host a team like this. Keio is such a highly-regarded university and one of the better lacrosse teams in Japan. It's another opportunity for our men to play someone else, but also it's an opportunity to showcase Sacred Heart as a university and what we're trying to do here as a program."
The Pioneers were put in touch with Keio through Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney, whose squad is also hosting Keio.
"The Director of Operations at Keio, Chris Jino, was given our information by Coach Tierney. The whole Tierney family has been very supportive of me for the last many years, but especially since this whole thing happened with us coming here. Coach Tierney had given our name to Keio and we talked to get the ball rolling."
Basti also announced on Thursday that the Pioneers will participate in The Patriots' Cup on March 1, 2014 in Dallas, Texas at SMU's Ford Stadium. Sacred Heart will take on Dartmouth in the event that benefits The Wounded Warrior Project. More details on the game will become available at a later date.
