The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team played neck and neck with Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon, but the Pioneers could not overcome the deficit caused by the Mount's five-goal third quarter and fall 8-9. Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) and Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, On.) led Sacred Heart with two goals each. With the loss the Pioneers drop to 3-9 on the season.
Senior Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) netted the first goal of the game less than one minute into the game. The Mount answered with back-to-back goals before Gannon scored his first goal of the game and Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) added a man-up goal giving Sacred Heart a 3-2 lead with 1:31 left in the quarter. Mount St. Mary's tied the game just 45 seconds before the buzzer.
The Pioneers outscored the Mount in the second quarter 2-1 due to Mawdsley's two goals: the first a man-up goal dished to the sophomore by Matt King (Brewster, N.Y.), the second from Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.).
Heading into the second half down 4-5, the Mount excelled in the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 5-2. Mount scored three goals early giving them a one-goal lead before Gannon found the back of the net narrowing Sacred Heart's deficit. Senior Aaron Lupo (Schenectady, N.Y.) added another goal with 1:11 on the clock, but the Pioneers headed into the final quarter of the game down 7-9.
The Sacred Heart defense shut down the Mount in the fourth, allowing them only one shot. Sacred Heart's Miller scored the only goal in the final 15 minutes of the game in an attempt to bring the Pioneers back on top. It was in vein as they fell 9-8 to Mount St. Mary's.
Face-off specialist Steve Kontos (Danvers, Mass.) was dominant once again in the face-off circle, winning 13-of-19 this afternoon.
The Pioneers take to Campus Field on Saturday as they face in-state rivals Quinnipiac Bobcats on Senior Day.
