Setting the Scene... The Pioneers travel to John Ryan Arena for their second and final meeting of the year with the Bentley Falcons Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. SHU is coming off a weekend split with Army while Bentley lost three out of four points in a home series with RIT last weekend. This is the Pioneers second and final midweek game of the year, the other coming in the first meeting with Bentley. Sacred Heart and Bentley enter the game tied for third in the league standing with 12 points each, although the Pioneers have two games in hand. The Series... Bentley won the first meeting with Sacred Heart last month in Watertown. Tom Dickhudt scored the game winning goal with 37 seconds left in regulation. The loss snapped a four game Pioneers winning streak over the Falcons. Sacred Heart leads the all-time series with Bentley 16-13-2.
SHU Splits With Army... The Pioneers split a weekend series with first place Army, losing the opener at Tate Rink before rebounding to win Saturday in Milford. Sophomore Nick Johnson and junior Bear Trapp each had three points while sophomore Erik Boisvert scored two goals. Army and Sacred Heart have now split their last five series.
Balancing Act... Twelve players have scored goals for SHU already this year. Sophomore Nick Johnson has the team lead with five goals while Trapp, Parent and junior Eric each have four goals. Meanwhile, sophomore Erik Boisvert has a team leading seven assists to go along with a pair of goals on the year. Sophomore Dave Jarman has three goals and five assists, eight points. Defensemen Corey Laurysen and Paul Ferraro each have five assists.
Streaks and Trends... Johnson has now registered a point in nine straight games while Boisvert and Trapp have tallied a point in seven of eight games...Trapp has moved into a tie for fifth in the league in assists and needs just four more points to reach the 100 point mark for his career...The Pioneers have the eighth ranked penalty kill in the country at 89.7 %. The Pioneers have the best combined special teams at 58.3%.
Scouting the Falcons... One of the biggest surprises early in the Atlantic Hockey season, Bentley starts the week at 5-9-2 and 5-4-2 in league play. After losing their first four, the Falcons went unbeaten in five out of six in early November but are now winless in five of their last six games in the second half of the month. Junior Marc Menzione is tied for fourth in the league in scoring with seven goals while Dain Prewitt has a team leading 13 points, inlcuding six goals and seven assists. Freshman Joe Calvi has been the most impressive young Falcon, posting the best goals against average in the league through the first two months of the season, posting a 2.13 goals against average.
Up Next... Sacred Heart will be off for the next three weeks for final exams and the holiday break. After Christmas, the Pioneers travel to Denver for the Denver Cup December 27-30. SHU will face Denver Univeristy in the first round on December 28 at 9:30 ET. The Pioneers will face either Northern Michigan or Dartmouth on second day of the tournament.
