Pioneers and Huskies Renew In-State Rivalry on Holiday Weekend
Nov. 24, 2006
The Game... The Pioneers and Huskies renew their in-state rivalry for the first time this season, a home-and-home series over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The teams play a pair of matinees, Saturday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum at 3:05 and then Sunday at 4:00 pm at Milford Ice Pavilion. Sacred Heart is coming off a 3-3 tie with Army Tuesday night, while Connecticut dropped a 7-3 decision to Holy Cross Tuesday in Worcester. The Pioneers are tied for first in the AHA standings while UConn sits eighth in the league.
The Series... Connecticut was the only team to win the season series from Sacred Heart last year. The Huskies won four out five meetings with the Pioneers, inlcuding a playoff win in the AHA Quarterfinals in March. UConn also swept SHU in December and then beat them in the final game of the regular season, costing the Pioneers a chance at the regular seaosn championship. Connecticut leads the all-times eries 16-11-3.
Last Time Out... Junior Luke Flicek scored the game tying goal 5:55 into the third period and Army rallied from a two goal deficit to earn a 3-3 tie with Sacred Heart in men's ice hockey action Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The draw means both teams remain tied for first place in Atlantic Hockey with 14 points apiece. Dave Grimson, Eric Giosa and Bear Trapp scored the Pioneer goals while Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Alexandre Parent each had a pair of assists. Jason Smith made 31 saves in goal.
Up Next... The Pioneers head west next weekend to face Atlantic Hockey newcomer Air Force in a two game series. Sacred Heart and Air Force will meet in Colorado Springs Friday night at 9:05 ET and Saturday at 9:35 ET. Both games can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
