Milford, CT - Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) had two goals and two assists, and freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) had one goal and two assists as the Sacred Heart Pioneers men's ice hockey team cruised past American International College 8-1 Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
O'Brien got the Pioneers started just 1:41 into the game with his team leading fourth goal of the season. Trapp, who had the game winning goal against AIC Friday night made it 2-0 Sacred Heart 2:36 later. After a pass from O'Brien, Trapp moved in and flipped a shot over the left shoulder of Yellow Jacket goaltender Coby Fenton for his third goal of the season.
Freshman Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) scored his first career goal with 13:28 to go in the first. After junior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) blasted a shot from the point, Giosa was in front of the net for the deflection goal
Sophomore Greg Genovese scored his second goal of the season at the 11:24 mark to put the Yellow Jackets on the board for the first, and only time in the game. However, Senior Erik Roos (Milford, CT) capped off a four goal first period with his fourth goal of the year with 2:55 left. Roos' goal came with the Pioneers shorthanded.
O'Brien scored his second of the game 9:45 into the second period. Trapp and Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) each got their second assists of the night. For Parent it capped off a weekend in which he had six points, one goal and five assists. Trapp finished the weekend set with four points, two goals and two assists.
Senior Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) got in the goal column with a tally at the 15:07 mark of the second period. Ferraro and Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) both scored their first goals of the season for the Pioneers in the third period. Freshman Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) had an assist on both goals, bringing his total to three on the year.
The Pioneers finished 2-7 on the power play while the Yellow Jackets were 0-8 with the extra man. Sacred Heart outshot the Yellow Jackets 46-22.
AIC used all three of their goaltenders. Cody Robinson was pulled after giving up the first two Pioneer goals. Freshman Tom Fenton, who was in net for the Jackets on Friday, played the rest of the first and second periods, making 22 saves. Junior Matt Tourville took over the net minding duties in the third period, making 5 saves. After the Pioneers scored their last goal, Tourville was lifted and Robinson went back in goal and finished with a total off 11 saves.
Junior Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) started in goal for the Pioneers and stopped 16 shots. After the Pioneers scored their final goal, freshman Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) was inserted. Drew made five saves in his first regular season action as a Pioneer.
The Pioneers will take to the road next week for a trip to Erie, PA. There they will meet Atlantic Hockey defending champion Mercyhurst for a pair of games. The teams will face off at 7:00 pm Friday and Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
