West Springfield, MA - Freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) scored with 2:50 left in the third period, and sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) had one goal and three assists as the Pioneers men's ice hockey team escaped with a 6-4 win over the American International Yellow Jackets Friday night at the Olympia Ice Center. The win was the Pioneers' (3-2-1, 3-1-1 Atlantic Hockey) first road victory of the season.
Trapp's game winner was set-up when Parent fed him a pass in the slot from the corner, and he fired it past Yellow Jackets goaltender Tom Fenton. Junior Todd Spencer (Brentwood, NH) also had an assist on Trapp's second goal of the year and the first game winner of his career.
Trapp's goal was the culmination of a crazy third period that saw the Pioneers blow two leads and the teams score a combined five goals.
The Pioneers controlled the first period offensively, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 14-6. Senior Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) scored the first goal of the game on the power play when he tipped in a blast by sophomore Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) with just under six minutes left in the period. Senior Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) also had an assist on Connerty's second goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets, who outshot the Pioneers 16-7 in the second frame, controlled much of the play early in the second period, but couldn't get a puck past Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC). AIC gave up some momentum when Preston Cicchine was called for interference at the 9:29 mark. The Pioneers went up 2-0 just 45 seconds later when defenseman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) tipped-in a shot by Parent for Sacred Heart's second power play goal of the game. It was Chmiel's second goal of the season.
The momentum would swing back the Yellow Jackets way when Connerty was called for an interference penalty with 7:44 left in the second. With just 15 seconds left on the power play, Greg Genovese scored to put AIC on the board. After Smith made a save on Matt Wooward's initial shot, Genovese was there to finish off the rebound for his first goal of year.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game with 42 seconds left in the second when Jeremy Leroux blasted a shot past Smith on a two-on-one break. Cicchine and Neil Sullivan both had assists on Leroux's first of the year.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead back 2:38 into the third period when Billinghurst capped off a rush with his second goal of the season. After Nick Kary's (Wetaskiwin, AB) initial shot was stopped, Billinghurst tipped in the rebound from a sitting position on the ice.
The action was just beginning however, as the Yellow Jackets would convert their second power play goal of the night 3:21 later when Jermey Tendler fired a shot underneath the right arm of Smith to tie the game at three.
Parent gave the Pioneers the lead back with 5:32 to go in the third. During a Yellow Jacket power play, Parent took a loose puck at the Pioneer blue line, moved in all alone and shot the puck over the shoulder of Fenton, for his first tally of the season.
Just 1:14 after Parent's goal, the AIC got even again after a breakdown in the Pioneer defense allowed Leorux to push a puck past Smith. Trapp would score the game winner 1:28 later.
Senior Erik Roos (Milford, CT) added an empty net goal with 27 seconds to go to cap off the Pioneer win. Parent had an assist on the goal to finish a night where he had four points.
In a game where special teams determined the momentum, the Pioneers went 2-7 with the man advantage while the Yellow Jackets were 2-5.
Fenton made 26 saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets while Smith made 30 saves to preserve the win.
The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets will wrap-up their weekend series Saturday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 5:00 pm.
