Milford, CT - Both teams scored a second period goal and Sacred Heart and Bentley played to a 1-1 tie in men's ice hockey Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The teams played to a scoreless, at times physical, first period. The Pioneers failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity, squandering a 5-on-3 power play for nearly one minute.
Senior Erik Roos (Milford, CT) was called for hooking with 25 seconds left in the first period and the Falcons would convert on the ensuing power play. Less than one minute into the second, with Roos still serving the penalty, senior Josh Chase took a pass from Marc Zwicky and flipped a shot past the glove of Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) for his first goal of the season. Freshman Jeff Gumaer also had an assist on the goal.
The Pioneers would get even later in the period. With 8:26 left, junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) finished a rush started by Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) and Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC). It was O'Brien's third goal of the season.
Sacred Heart out shot Bentley 34-23 but could only get one past Falcon goaltender Jason Kearney, who made 33 saves. Smith made 22 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers (2-1-1, 2-0-1 Atlantic Hockey) will face off against Bentley again on Saturday night. The puck drops at the John A. Ryan Rink at 7:30 pm.
