Pioneers Open Home Slate with Set Against Archrival Mercyhurst

Nov. 2, 2006

The Game... The top two teams in the Atlantic Hockey preseason coaches poll meet for the first time this season as Sacred Heart and Mercyhurst meet at the Milford Ice Pavilion this weekend. The set marks the Pioeners' home opener, after spending the first six games on the road. Game times are 7:00 pm Friday and Saturday night and both games can be heard on WICC 600 AM.

The Series... Sacred Heart won the season series from Mercyhurst 3-1 last year. The two teams split a pair of games in Erie in November and the Pioneers swept the set in Milford in January. Rocco Molinaro scored on a penalty shot in the second game in Erie. In the second game in Milford, Jason Smith tied a school record with 54 saves in a 2-1 Pioneer win. The all-time series between the Pioneers and Lakers is even, 10-10-2.

Last Time Out... The Pioneers are coming off a weekend split in Michigan, beating Wayne State and falling to Michigan State. Mercyhurst split a series with UConn last weekend in Erie. The Lakers won Friday night before falling in overtime to the Huskies on Saturday night.
