The Pioneer men's ice hockey team opens the 2006-07 season with a visit to Hockey East member UMass at the Mullins Center Friday night at 7:00 pm.Saturday the Pioneers kick-off the Atlantic Hockey season with a game at Tate Rink to take on the Black Knights of Army at 7:00 pm. Both games can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
Sacred Heart skated to a 3-3 draw with Ottawa in an exhibition game last weekend at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford. Eric Giosa, Dave Grimson and Bear Trapp all scored goals for the Pioneers. Army took a pair of games from Ryerson University last weekend at Tate Rink in their exhibition openers. The Minutemen played a tune-up against New Brunswick in Amherst and came away 4-2 winners.
This is the second meeting between UMass and Sacred Heart. On December 11th, 2004, the Minutemen topped the Pioneers 2-1 with two first period goals. Andrew Billinghurst scored the Pioneers only goal of the game. The Pioneers and Black Knights split their four game series last year with each team winning on their home ice. Army was one of only two teams that SHU did not win a series from in 2005-06. The Pioneers won their home games 4-2 and 3-0, while their offense struggled at Tate Rink, dropping decisions by scores of 2-1 and 4-0. Sacred Heart leads the all-time series 16-9-0.
