Pioneers Picked Third in Preseason Poll

Fairfield, CT - The Pioneers men's ice hockey team was picked third in the Atlantic Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll released Wednesday by the conference office. The Pioneers had 49 points in the poll, including one first place vote.

Defending champion Mercyhurst and Holy Cross, who knocked Sacred Heart out of the 2005 playoffs, topped the poll with 59 points each. Mercyhurst led with four first place votes, to Holy Cross' three.

Rounding out the top five are the Canisius College Golden Griffins (40 points) and the University of Connecticut Huskies (29 points). The Bentley College Falcons (23 points), Army Black Knights (18 points) and American International Yellow Jackets (11 points) were picked in positions six through eight by the leagues coaches.

The Pioneers will open their season with a scrimmage against Ryerson on Saturday, October 8th. The regular season begins October 14th at Union. The first Pioneer home game will be the Atlantic Hockey opener against Canisius on Friday, October 28th.
