Pioneers' Chmiel Signs with West Virginia Club

Fairfield, CT - Former Pioneer defenseman Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) has signed a contract with the Wheeling Nailers of the East Coast Hockey League. Chmiel joins the Nailers for his first professional season after four years on the SHU blueline.

Chmiel anchored the Pioneers defense corps, scoring 21 goals and adding 56 assists over his career. In his senior season he compiled 22 points, the most of any Pioneer defenseman. He was the primary pointman on the Pioneer power play, with five of his seven goals coming with the Pioneers on the man advantage.

Chmiel graduated from Sacred Heart in May with a degree in business from the Jack F. Welch College of Business.

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Chmiel played with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL and Pittsburgh Forge of the NAHL before joining Sacred Heart in the fall of 2002.
