SHU Men's Ice Hockey Adds Five For New Season

June 5, 2008

Fairfield, CT - Sacred Heart men's ice hockey Head Coach Shaun Hannah has announced the Pioneers incoming recruiting class for the 2008-09 season. SHU will welcome five new skaters to the varsity squad when the team takes the ice this fall. The group includes two forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender.

Leading the group of Pioneer recruits is Winnipeg, MB native Matt Gingera. Playing for the Winnipeg Saints, Gingera led the Manitoba Junior League in goals last season with 66. During his three seasons with the Saints Gingera established a new team record for goals in a career with 149. He led the Saints in scoring last season with 111 points. Gingera also was the top scorer during the MJHL playoffs with 17 goals and 28 points in 15 games, leading the Saints to the finals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Championship. Gingera was the Sher-Wood Hockey Player of the Month three times (December, February and March) and the Old Dutch Player of the Week three times. He was selected as an MJHL First Team All-Star and was a member of the Addison Division at the 2008 MJHL All-Star Weekend.

Also joining the Pioneers up front is Anthony Yelovich (Little Falls, NJ). Yelovich piled up 30 points, 12 goals, and 18 assists for the Springfield Junior Falcons of the Eastern Junior Hockey League last season. "Anthony is a power forward with an excellent shot and puckhandling skills, Hannah said. "He is a physical player who is strong on the puck and plays the game with a high level of competitiveness."

Defenseman Chris Bailer (Red Deer, AB) is one of two new faces joining the Pioneer defense this season. An excellent defensive defenseman, Bailer led his Albert Junior Hockey League team, the Olds Grizzlys, with 100 block shots last year. He scored three goals and added 14 assists for 20 points. "Chris is a very reliable and fearless defenseman who sacrifices his body to defend his net," Hannah said.

The other new member of the Pioneer defense core is Ryan Miniaci (Monroe, CT). A local product, Miniaci played for Fairfield Prep High School during the 2002-03 season. Last season he scored six goals and seven assists in 45 games for the New Hampshire Monarchs, helping his team win the USA Hockey Tier III Junior A National Championship.

The final new member of the SHU squad is goaltender Angelo Tsaganeas (Dumont, NJ). Tsaganeas will be a junior in the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart this fall. He has played for the Sacred Heart club hockey team and will serve as the Pioneers third goalie next season.

"This is a group of young men who are academically focused, with a strong work ethic and solid character, Hannah said. "We expect that they will fit in well with our returning players and each will contribute in their own way in our quest to win the Atlantic Hockey Championship."
