Bear Trapp Named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year

Fairfield, CT - Freshman forward Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) has been named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the year, leading a group of four Pioneers who won All-Conference Honors as announced by the Atlantic Hockey office Thursday. Junior forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) and junior goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) were selected to the All-League first team, while sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) was named to the second team.
Trapp tallied 16 goals and added 27 assists for 43 points in his rookie campaign. Those totals put him second on the team in scoring. The freshman netted seven game winners and six goals on the power play for the Pioneers this season. The seven clinchers were the fourth most of any player in the nation. Trapp was second in the country in points per game among rookies at 1.26.
O'Brien led the AHA in scoring for the regular season, with 50 points. He tallied 19 goals and 31 assists, both team highs. He set new Sacred Heart records for points and assists in a single season.
Smith was one of the most consistent players in the league this year. In 30 starts, he went 18-11-1. The 18 victories are a new school record for wins by a goaltender in one season. He finished the season with a 2.24 goals against average and a .927 save percentage, the seventh best in the country.
Parent was third on the Pioneers in scoring, finishing the season with 38 total points, including 11 goals and 27 assists.
The Pioneers posted a 21-12-2 overall record and a 18-8-2 mark in conference play, finishing third in the league. The 21 wins were the most in school history.
