Fairfield, CT - Pioneers junior goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) has been named the Atlantic Hockey goalie of the week for the week of January 23rd-29th. It's the fourth time this season that Smith has garnered top goaltender honors.
Smith anchored the Pioneer defense to their critical weekend sweep of Mercyhurst. Friday night Smith was solid as usual in net, allowing only one goal and stopping 25 Laker shots to give the Pioneers a win in the opener. However, Saturday night, Smith took his game to another level, turning in a record tying performance, making 54 saves in net to secure the 2-1 win and series sweep for Sacred Heart. His performance including stopping 23 shots in the second period when Mercyhurst went 0-6 on the powerplay. The 54 saves by Smith tied the school record for saves in a game, set by Smith himself on October 11, 2003 at Providence. Smith lowered his goals against average to 2.06, now the best mark in Atlantic Hockey, and 11th best in the country. His .934 save percentage ranks him fifth in the country in that category.
Smith and the Pioneers (16-9-1, 13-6-1 AHA) face Army in a home-and-home series this weekend. The teams meet Friday night in West Point and then will have the return match Saturday evening at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
