Pioneers Travel To AIC Tuesday Night

Setting the Scene... The Pioneers men's ice hockey team opens a busy week with a visit to American International College Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. SHU is coming off a 2-1 upset of Cornell Saturday night in Ithaca. The Yellow Jackets started the second half with a 5-4 loss to Connecticut Saturday in Storrs. The Pioneers are currently riding a five game unbeaten streak and have tallied at least one point in 13 of their last 14 games.

The Series... This is the second, and final, meeting of the season between Sacred Heart and AIC. The Pioneers won the previous meeting, 5-2, on election night. Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Bear Trapp each had a goal and two assists in the win and Stefan Drew made 34 saves in goal. Sacred Heart is unbeaten in 14 of it's last 15 meetings with AIC and leads the all-time series with the Yellow Jackets 15-8-4.

Pioneers Upset Cornell... The Pioneers opened the second half of the season with a 2-1 win at Cornell Saturday night. It was Sacred Heart's second win all-time over the Big Red and second win of the season over and ECACHL team for SHU. The victory was also special for Pioneer coach Shaun Hannah, who won in his return to his almamater Junior Alexandre Parent scored the game winning goal early in the third period. Jason Smith made 28 saves, including 13 in the third period and allowed just one goal. Smith has now allowed just one goal in each of his last three games.

Honors... Senior Jason Smith was named the Atlantic Hockey goaltender of the week for the week of January 2-7. This is the second straight week and third time in the last month that Smith has taken the league's top goaltending honors. In addition, Smith was named an Honorable Mention National Player of the Month for December. Over his last four games, Smith has a 1.00 goals against average and has posted a 3-0-1 record.

Up Next... This weekend the Pioneers host RIT in a two game set at Milford Ice Pavilion in a battle for first place in the AHA standings. Face-off both nights is set for 7:00 pm and coverage can be heard all weekend on SacredHeartPioneers.com
