Denver, CO - Freshman Phil Fox had two goals and an assist and sophomore Bill Smith added a goal and an assist as Northern Michigan held off Sacred Heart, 5-2, in the consolation game of the Denver Cup Saturday at Magness Arena.
Although Northern Michigan controlled much of the play in the first period, Sacred Heart scored first when sophomore Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON)netted a shorthanded tally at the 9:47 mark of the first period. As Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) collected a loose puck at the SHU blueline, Jarman broke up ice and took a headlong pass from Boisvert. Jarman skated into the offensive zone and snapped a shot through the pads of Wildcats' goaltender Reid Ellingson for his fifth goal of the year.
The Wildcats tied the game with 28 seconds left in the first period on a goal by freshman Phil Fox. As Northern Michigan cycled the puck in the offensive zone, Fox got loose in the slot, took a pass from Smith and fired a shot through the legs of SHU goaltender Olivier St. Onge (Wickham, QC) to even the score.
Junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) gave the Pioneers the lead back 2:26 into the second period. With Sacred Heart on the power play, Trapp took a pass from Boisvert and rifled a shot from the top of the face-off circles that beat Ellingson for his fifth goal of the year. Matt Butcher got the Wildcats even again at the 7:21 mark when he cleaned up a rebound off a shot by Mark Olver.
Trapp and Corey Laurysen (Carp, ON) each were called for minor penalties at the 11:52 mark of the second period. The Wildcats took advantage of the two-man power play as Erik Spady gave Northern Michigan the lead with 6:22 left in the second period. Spady took a pass from Erik Gustafsson and rifled a shot that went high over the shoulder of St. Onge to give the Wildcats the lead going into the locker room.
Northern Michigan sealed the game with a goal by Smith with 4:20 left in the game. Smith and Olver moved in on a two-on-one break with Olver carrying the puck. Olver dished the puck through the crease and Smith tapped it into the open corner of the net to make it 4-2. Fox tallied an empty net goal to complete the scoring.
