Two Late Goals Lift Pioneers Over Bentley, 3-1
Dec. 21, 2006
Milford, CT - Sophomore Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) tallied a goal and an assist and Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) made 30 saves in net as Sacred Heart scored two goals in a 15 second span in the third period to seal a 3-1 victory over Bentley in men's ice hockey action Thursday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
After an even first two periods, the third period remained tied into the latter stages until the Pioneers were able to garner three excellent scoring chances, and convert on two of them. First, sophomore Eric Giosa (Northville, MI), ripped a shot on which Bentley goaltender Ray Jean flicked his glove in the air and made a brilliant save to keep the game even. However, just seconds later, with 3:46 remaining in regulation, senior Todd Spencer (Brentwood, NH) fired a shot from the blue-line which junior Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) was in front to deflect into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Off the ensuing face-off, Tyll took a pass from Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) and snapped a shot that beat Jean to give the Pioneers a two goal lead and lock-up the victory.
Junior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) opened the scoring for the Pioneers halfway through the first period. Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) dumped the puck on net from the blue line and, as it started to trickle through Jean's pads, Parent swooped in and slammed home the loose puck. It was Parent's eighth goal of the season.
Bentley tied the game with seven minutes left in the second period on a power play goal by sophomore Tom Dickhudt. As the Falcons pressured Smith, Nick DeCroo fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Smith. However, the loose rebound bounced back to Dickhudt who snapped a shot past Smith for his sixth goal of the year.
The Falcons out-shot the Pioneers 31-23 for the game. Neither team was very efficient on the power play as the Falcons were 1-7 while the Pioneers were unable to convert in eight opportunities with the man advantage.
The Pioneers and Falcons will meet again Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
