Colorado Springs, CO - Senior Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) made 40 saves and senior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) added a goal an assist as Sacred Heart skated to a 2-2 tie with #9 Colorado College Friday night at the World Arena. The draw was the first ever point for Sacred Heart against a WCHA school.
Grimson put the Pioneers on the board first with a powerplay goal with 3:34 left in the first period. As SHU cycled the puck, senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) fed Grimson a pass at the point and the captain wound up and ripped a shot past Tiger goaltender Richard Bachmann for his second goal of the year.
Colorado College scored two goals in the second period to take the lead. Junior Brian McMillin put the Tigers on the board at the 8:44 mark with as he raced up the ice and lifted a backhanded shot over Drew's right shoulder. Junior Brian Connelly gave CC the lead with 3:48 left on a powerplay tally.
Junior Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) scored the game-tying goal 36 seconds into the third period. Grimson fired a shot from the point that went high over the net, going high off the boards. The puck caromed back out front to Gordon who snapped a shot into the open corner of the net to tie the game.
Drew was fantastic the entire game for Sacred Heart, making 31 saves through the first two periods. His best save came in the final seconds, as he stacked the pads against Andreas Vlassopoulos, denying a shorthanded attempt on the top of the goalmouth. Drew also made several spectacular saves with the glovehand.
Sacred Heart and Colorado College close out their weekend series Saturday night at the World Arena. Face-off is set for 9:07 pm ET.
