AMHERST, MA (December 11) - Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) scored 22 seconds into the game, but the Pioneers fell the the Massachusetts Minutemen 2-1 in non-conference action Saturday Night.
After Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) won the opening faceoff, the Pioneers started their attack up ice. Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) moved the puck up to Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC). Parent then lead Billinghurst up ice with a pass into the UMass zone. Billinghurst won the race to the puck and crashed the net sending his shot past Minutmen goalie Gabe Winer for the Pioneers only goal of the night just 22 seconds in.
Masachusetts tied the contest at the 7:22 mark when Matt Burto fired home a rebound just seconds after the Pioneers killed off a Peter Giatrelis (Wallingford, CT) penalty to knot the contest at 1-1.
The Minutemen would then go-ahead for good on the power play later in the first. P.J. Fenton would again capitalize on a rebound in front of SHU net minder Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC) sending the shot over his shoulder for the 2-1 lead.
LaPointe finished the night making 34 saves in keeping Sacred Heart in the contest. Winer made 20 saves on the night for UMass.
The Pioneers return to action on December 29 with an exhibition game at the Milford Ice Pavilion with St. Clair College before returning to Atlantic Hockey action on January 4 when they host defending Atlantic Hockey champs Holy Cross. Face off for both games is at 7:00 PM.
